Local SEO Ranking Factors: What Google Documents

Understand relevance, distance and prominence in Google's local results. Separate documented ranking guidance from experiments and unsupported claims.

Google describes local results using relevance, distance and prominence. These are a framework for understanding results, not a public formula with fixed percentage weights. Treat third-party surveys and experiments as different kinds of evidence from Google's documentation.

Relevance: match the actual need

A customer looking for appliance repair needs to know which appliances you repair and where you work. Accurate categories and clear service content help communicate that fit. Repeating a city name in every sentence does not resolve an unclear offer. Match the Business Profile to the real business, then use keyword research to understand customers' language.

Distance: compare fairly

Results change with the searcher's location. A provider can be highly visible close to its premises and absent farther away. Enlarging a stated service area does not move the business's physical location or ensure coverage across that area. Compare repeat observations at fixed points using the same query and settings.

Prominence: distinguish evidence from shortcuts

Google identifies signals such as links, review counts and positive ratings when explaining prominence. That does not establish a guaranteed number of reviews or a fixed value for a directory link. A legitimate review process and useful local relationships make better operational investments than buying activity intended to manipulate results.

Claims that need qualification

Review replies can help customers and show that the business values feedback. This is different from claiming that response rate has a confirmed independent ranking weight. Photos help people recognise and evaluate a business; no documented quota guarantees placement. A schema generator describes facts on a page; it does not purchase eligibility or ranking.

An illustrative comparison finds one business with more reviews ranking below a closer competitor. Review count alone cannot explain the result. Record distance, category, query and date before forming a hypothesis. Use the grid analyser to summarise your observations, with its missing-data rules visible.

Measure an intervention

Choose a real customer problem, change the relevant asset, record the release, and compare matched periods. Keep a record of holidays, advertising changes and closures that might explain movement. Read local SEO measurement before treating a movement in rank as business growth.

Do Q&A, opening hours or phone calls have a fixed ranking weight?

Google's published explanation does not provide independent numerical weights for these activities. Accurate opening hours help customers decide whether a business can serve them. A phone interaction is a customer-action measure; it does not establish that generating more clicks causes a ranking improvement.

Google announced changes to the Business Profile Q&A experience in December 2025, including answers informed by business information and customer contributions. Availability and controls can vary. Check the current customer-facing experience and answer factual questions where the feature is available. Keep useful answers on the business's own location pages as well. This feature change is not evidence of a guaranteed Q&A ranking bonus.

Use the business-hours guide to keep schedules accurate and the lead-tracking guide to separate phone clicks, connected calls and qualified enquiries. A year in a ranking-factor search does not change the standard of evidence: compare current official documentation, a study's design and the conditions in your own observations.
