Local Keyword Research: Map Searches to Useful Pages

Research local search questions, group them by customer intent and assign each topic a useful page. Build a keyword map without repetitive city pages.

Local keyword research starts with services people can buy and questions they need answered. Build a small query-to-page map before producing content. Close variants usually belong on the same useful page, while distinct customer decisions may deserve separate explanations.

Use the keyword and page planner to turn your real services and locations into a query map and page briefs. Export the worksheet, then validate the ideas against actual search evidence.

Gather language from several sources

List real services, customer questions, locations served and problems solved. Compare these with Search Console queries, enquiry language and search-tool estimates. Search Console impressions describe your site's observed exposure; keyword-tool volume estimates describe a different population. Keep country, date and device with each dataset.

Inspect the result type

For a candidate query, examine whether the result is a map, service page, directory, guide or tool. Record the search location and date. “Local SEO analysis” may call for a usable audit workflow, while “local SEO agency” calls for a commercial comparison. A broad educational definition is unlikely to satisfy every one of those needs.

Assign one primary owner

Use a worksheet with query cluster, intent, existing destination, evidence, content gap and next action. Group spelling variations and near-synonyms where they express the same task. Do not create separate pages for “local search SEO,” “SEO local search” and “local SEO search” merely to repeat their exact wording.

For an illustrative electrical contractor, emergency repairs and planned panel upgrades need different service details and response expectations. Several word-order variants of panel installation can share one page. City pages require real local usefulness and service coverage; a list of city names is not evidence for publishing them.

Prioritise the work

Give priority to a demonstrated customer problem, a relevant search opportunity and a page the business can support with facts. Unmeasured topics can still be valuable, but label their demand as unknown. Avoid invented volumes and keyword-density targets.

Review the resulting map against your location-page structure and content plan. Revisit it when query-to-page data shows overlap, or when the business adds a genuinely different service.
