Local SEO lead tracking connects a visitor’s route to a genuine enquiry and its later business outcome. Start with a small measurement plan: what happened, where the enquiry came from, whether the business can help, and what eventually happened. Keep reporting useful without sending contact details into analytics.
Define a lead before counting it
A submitted enquiry that the website’s form service accepts can count as an enquiry received. It still needs review for spam, service fit and duplicates. A contact-page visit, form start, phone-link click or agency referral is an earlier interaction.
A qualified lead is a reviewed enquiry that meets the business’s agreed criteria. A won opportunity has a confirmed commercial outcome. Write those definitions down with the person handling enquiries. Do not label every button click a sale or fill unknown lead values with invented revenue.
Keep the source with the enquiry
Record the source page, landing page, recognised campaign labels and referring site where available and appropriate. Keep only the fields needed for attribution. Avoid retaining arbitrary URL parameters, customer names in campaigns or a full referring URL that may contain private information.
Use the UTM builder for links in campaigns and Business Profile website destinations. Keep internal navigation free of campaign tags so a visitor’s original source is not overwritten by a link between your own pages.
Treat phone measurement as a separate system
A click on a telephone link proves only that the link was selected. To measure connected calls, the business needs an actual phone or call-tracking system and a process for recording outcomes. Dynamic number insertion and platform listing numbers need planning so customers still reach the intended business.
Choose a provider only after defining number ownership, routing, outages, portability and access to reports. Recording conversations adds a separate operational and consent decision; it is not required merely to count calls. Do not put customer phone numbers or recordings into ordinary website event parameters.
Use analytics for behaviour and the enquiry system for records
Google Analytics supports a recommended generate_lead event. Trigger it at the point defined in your measurement plan, such as successful form acceptance, and mark it as a key event when appropriate. Keep contact details and free-text messages in the enquiry system rather than sending them to Analytics.
Browser analytics may be absent when a visitor declines analytics, blocks scripts or closes the page quickly. The enquiry inbox should remain the record for accepted forms. Compare the systems with their different coverage in mind rather than expecting identical counts.
Review the handoff
For each enquiry, record received date, source, owner, next action and status. Add qualification, booking and won/lost outcomes when they become known. The lead-tracking worksheet includes those fields without sample customer data.
An illustrative heating contractor receives ten enquiries, but three are duplicate messages and two request a service it does not offer. Seven unique enquiries and five potentially suitable opportunities describe different stages. A campaign report claiming ten sales would misrepresent all of them.
Test the journey before relying on the report
Verify that validation errors do not count as success, repeated clicks do not create duplicate sends, and direct visits to a thank-you page do not fabricate enquiries. Check mobile completion and the behaviour when analytics is declined. Use a designated test process so QA activity is recognisable and does not pollute the sales inbox.
Review Search Console for search visibility alongside these business measures. Use the same date windows and allow for the time between first enquiry and a final decision.
