Categories describe what a business is. Start with the core activity and choose from the options currently available in the profile editor. Do not use categories as a list of keywords or select unrelated activities simply because a competitor ranks for them.
Describe the business before opening the editor
Write a plain-language description of the primary service and supporting activities. Compare candidate categories with the actual business model. A shop selling bicycles and doing repairs may need to consider both activities; a shop that merely sells a few accessories should not claim to be every type of specialist retailer.
Check additional categories carefully
Add relevant categories when they describe genuine parts of the business. Product names and individual services may belong in their dedicated fields instead. Availability varies, so keep the chosen wording and review date with the profile record.
Use competitor research as a clue
Review comparable businesses that meet the same customer need. Their categories can suggest questions, but do not prove that copying them is appropriate. Results may differ because of location, service fit, reputation and other factors. Read the competitor audit before drawing conclusions from a single result.
Make changes deliberately
Record the old and new values, business rationale and date. Check the public profile afterwards and follow any verification prompts provided by Google. Avoid a stream of speculative edits that makes it difficult to tell what changed or why.
Link the profile to clear service and location information. A category does not replace explaining what customers can actually book.
Categories, attributes and paid-ad job types
A Business Profile category describes what the business is. Attributes describe supported details such as facilities or service options. Local Services Ads uses its own eligibility, categories and job types; a category appearing in Business Profile does not establish paid-ad eligibility. Check the Local Services Ads category guide before planning a campaign.
