Local Services Ads are a paid Google product with their own category, location and verification requirements. A category available in Google Business Profile does not automatically establish eligibility to advertise through Local Services Ads. Check the actual business, service and market in the current eligibility flow.
Separate three decisions
A Business Profile category describes the business in local search. A Local Services Ads category determines an advertising option offered to eligible businesses. Job types specify services offered within an available advertising category.
Start with a list of work the business really performs, then compare it with Google’s current choices. If the option you want is unavailable, do not select an unrelated category as a workaround. The Business Profile category guide covers the separate organic-listing decision.
Use the current eligibility check
Open Google’s Local Services Ads getting-started guidance and use its eligibility route for the business’s country and area. Record the category, location and date checked. A screenshot or list from another year or country is not a reliable promise of present availability.
For an illustrative asphalt-paving contractor, the useful question is whether its actual services have an eligible category and job types in the intended market. A search phrase containing “asphalt paving” does not prove Google offers that exact option. Document the result instead of selecting a nearby-sounding trade.
Review job types and service areas
Google lets advertisers choose available job types and service areas that influence where ads may be eligible to appear. Select work the team can actually deliver and areas it can reliably serve. Review the choices with the person who qualifies incoming enquiries.
For example, a repair business may accept emergency repairs but not installations. Broad settings that attract installation enquiries could waste staff time even when the calls are real. Keep the advertised offer and the website explanation aligned.
Prepare for screening
Google’s checks vary by category and location and may include business registration, insurance, licensing or background checks. Follow the requirements shown for the specific business and retain business-controlled account ownership. An existing website or verified profile is not a universal substitute for the remaining checks.
Never describe a business as screened, licensed or approved before the relevant evidence exists. This guide does not verify any advertiser or guarantee acceptance.
Decide how a lead will be handled
Before enabling an ad, agree who answers enquiries, what makes a job suitable, how bookings are recorded and how lead quality will be reviewed. Keep the platform’s lead count separate from qualified opportunities and completed jobs.
Use the lead-tracking worksheet to record the source, service, outcome and value when known. Review unsuitable enquiries by job type or area before making broad changes. Do not combine paid and organic enquiries into a single “SEO leads” total.
Compare advertising with the underlying website work
Local Services Ads do not replace accurate hours, useful service information, dependable booking and fair review practices. The local SEO versus Google Ads guide explains how paid visibility and organic work can serve different needs.
If the business is ineligible or not ready to respond reliably, record that decision and improve the underlying customer journey. There is no need to create misleading pages or promise future ad availability to complete a useful local SEO plan.
