A useful competitor audit compares businesses a customer might actually choose for the same need. Start with the service and search location. A famous national brand or a nearby unrelated business may be a poor comparison.
Define the sample
Choose a small set of relevant queries and fixed locations. Record date, device assumptions and search engine. Note the result types: maps, service pages, directories and informational resources. Repeated observations help avoid treating one variable result as permanent.
Compare the journey
Inspect available services, branch information, booking routes, public hours and useful proof. Check the profile and the linked page together. Record observable differences without assuming they caused the ranking order.
For a fictional home-service business, competitors' pages clearly explain weekend availability while its own site does not. If the business actually offers weekend appointments, clearer information is a useful improvement. Copying competitor claims without confirming availability would mislead customers.
Look for an answer gap
Review questions competitors answer and questions they leave unresolved. A practical checklist, comparison or original resource may be useful when it solves a real task. Copying headings and replacing names does not create a distinctive page.
Keep tool estimates in context
Third-party traffic, keyword and authority figures are estimates. Preserve country and snapshot date. A sitemap reveals published URLs, not rankings, traffic or editorial quality. A competitor's large page count is not a target for your own publication volume.
Convert findings into a query-to-page map and prioritised audit. Validate changes against your business facts and review outcomes after implementation.
