NAP Consistency: Fix Business Data That Misleads Customers

Check business names, addresses and phone numbers across profiles, pages and directories. Prioritise incorrect information and document each correction.

NAP means name, address and phone. Consistency work aims to make the same real business recognisable and reachable across its website and listings. It should focus on meaningful accuracy, not the idea that every harmless abbreviation destroys rankings.

Paste your reference details and listing records into the listing consistency checker. It compares the data you supply and exports a correction worksheet for verification.

Establish the approved record

Confirm the business's public name, correct address where displayed, main phone, website and branch identifier. For service-area businesses, respect the appropriate address visibility rules. Keep the internal source record separate from what is meant to be public.

Classify the mismatch

  • Critical: disconnected phone, wrong premises, another business's booking link or an incorrect closed status.
  • Material: obsolete trading name, missing unit that prevents arrival, or a profile linked to the wrong branch.
  • Formatting: equivalent street abbreviations, punctuation or presentation that still identifies the same place.

This is an operational prioritisation method, not a published Google weighting system. Investigate ambiguous differences rather than automatically standardising data that has a legitimate local purpose.

Coordinate tracking numbers

Call tracking can complicate a record if numbers are swapped without a plan. Keep a stable business-controlled contact number in the approved source, follow each platform's phone rules, and document where tracking is installed. Confirm calls reach the right branch. Do not place a central number everywhere if it routes customers incorrectly.

Verify the correction

Check the live listing, not just the edit screen. Record pending review or verification steps and inspect the downstream destinations that matter most. In a fictional repair business, a supplier directory still lists the old premises after a move. Correcting it and checking the phone route is a concrete task; repeatedly resubmitting identical data is not proof of success.

Use the citation tracker and relocation checklist to maintain an evidence trail.
