Business Relocation and Closures: Update Local Search Records

Update local search records when a business moves or closes. Coordinate profiles, website pages, listings and customer directions from one change record.

A business move changes a customer journey, not just an address field. Plan the website, profile, directories, phone routing and booking information together so people can reach the correct operation.

Define what is changing

Distinguish a continuing business moving premises, a second branch opening and a permanent closure. Record the effective date, old and new details, services affected and who approves the information. Different scenarios can require different platform actions.

Preserve useful destinations

Update the existing location page when it still represents the same continuing branch. If a URL changes, map the old page to a genuinely relevant replacement. Do not redirect every closed location to the homepage without considering what a customer visiting that old page needs to know.

Coordinate the public records

Use the appropriate Business Profile edit or closure process. Check for old or duplicate listings and follow official guidance rather than creating replacements reflexively. Update important directories, appointment platforms and campaign destinations. Retain an evidence register with pending and verified states.

In an illustrative salon move, the appointment confirmation still contains the old address after the website changes. The customer problem remains. Include confirmation messages, directions and staff instructions in the review.

Explain temporary disruption

Publish accurate availability and arrival guidance for the transition. If the business is permanently closed, state that clearly and offer a relevant alternative only when one exists. Do not invent continuity or send customers to an unrelated company.

Check after the change

Verify search results, map pins, public phone routes and important links. Some platforms process changes asynchronously; a submitted edit is not a completed correction.

Use duplicate listing guidance and the location register approach for a traceable transition.
