Local SEO vs SEO: Choose the Right Search Work

Compare local SEO with broader organic SEO. Understand where profiles, location pages, technical work and content fit your customers' search journey.

Local SEO focuses on searches where a place or service area matters. Broader website SEO covers how pages are discovered, understood and selected in organic results. A business can need both.

Map the customer journey

A person searching for a nearby repair shop may compare map listings, then open a service page and book. A person researching how a component works may read an educational article without needing a nearby provider. The same business can serve both journeys, but they require different content and measures.

Match the work to the asset

Business Profile accuracy, local listing maintenance and branch-level information belong to local operations. Crawlability, useful content, internal links and page usability support the website more broadly. Neither category replaces the other. A well-maintained profile cannot repair a broken booking form, and an excellent article cannot correct an inaccurate map pin.

Avoid a false choice

For an illustrative regional retailer, store pages help customers visit while national buying guides explain products. Organise each around its actual purpose. Do not add city names to every article or assume that all organic impressions represent local demand.

Measure the stages separately

Use profile interactions and repeatable map observations alongside website query/page data and qualified outcomes. Keep geographic and reporting settings visible. A domain-wide average position is not a local Map Pack rank.

Start with the audit workflow and keyword research to decide which asset should own each need. If the business serves no customers in person, check eligibility before creating a Business Profile.
