Local Citations: Choose Listings That Customers Use

Choose relevant local citations, verify your business information and track corrections. Focus listing work on platforms your customers can use.

A local citation is a mention of a business's identity or contact information on another website or platform. Structured listings and ordinary editorial mentions serve different purposes. Build and correct useful records instead of pursuing an arbitrary directory count.

Start with the customer-facing platforms

Identify the search engines, maps, review sites and sector directories relevant to the business and country. Check for an existing record before adding another. Use the directory reference to find official starting points and assess whether each platform fits the business.

Record the state of each listing

Maintain the directory, public listing URL, ownership status, name, address, phone, website, last checked date and correction status. Separate “submitted” from “live and checked.” A provider's distribution list does not establish that each destination has published accurate data.

In an illustrative restaurant audit, an old reservation URL causes more immediate harm than a harmless abbreviation in the street name. Fix errors that change identity, location, contact or the purchase path first. Use NAP consistency to distinguish meaningful mismatches from formatting.

Compare manual and managed approaches

Manual maintenance can be practical for a small set of important records. Software or a service may help when many locations and update flows are involved. Ask what platforms are covered in your country, who owns the records, how duplicates are handled and what happens after cancellation. Do not assume that payment guarantees every verification or suppression request.

Track accuracy, customer referrals and resolved problems. A listing can be useful even when its link is qualified or not followed by a search engine. A large number of irrelevant directory links does not establish local authority.

Download the citation register and give each important correction an owner. After a move or phone change, verify the public destination rather than relying only on a vendor's completion flag.

Put Bing imports into the listing workflow

An import can save retyping, but it still needs a source of truth and a review of the published result. Use the Bing Places import and sync guide to decide which system owns updates and check whether changes actually reached the listing.
