Local Rank Tracking: Design a Repeatable Grid

Design a repeatable local rank grid with consistent queries, coordinates and conditions. Interpret coverage without confusing missing and not-found data.

Local rank tracking records search results under specified conditions. A grid samples several locations so you can see how visibility changes across an area. It is a set of observations, not a complete census of every customer's results.

Keep the test settings stable

Record the search query, search engine, language, device assumption, business being tracked, grid coordinates, spacing, date and result cutoff. Repeat those settings when comparing scans. A larger grid can lower an apparent average simply by adding distant points.

Define “not found” and missing data

A business outside the tool's cutoff is different from a scan that failed. Keep these states separate. Do not replace both with a fabricated rank and then report that as an observed average. The grid analyser calculates top-three coverage over valid observations and reports unknown rows separately.

Compare coverage and outcomes

Review the share of valid points where the business appears in the top three and top ten, then inspect the actual map. Averages can hide a strong centre and weak outer area. The sample is not weighted by population, demand or sales unless you deliberately add and explain that methodology.

In an illustrative repair business, coverage is strongest around its premises but weak across a river. The map suggests a geographic pattern; it does not prove the cause. Check distance, access, competitors and query fit before recommending content or profile changes.

Use scans to investigate

Choose queries tied to real services. Keep branded searches separate from discovery queries and avoid constant scanning that adds cost without changing a decision. Record significant business and website changes alongside the next comparable scan.

Read ranking factors and combine rank observations with qualified-outcome reporting.
